Special Needs Dogs @ Center Fostered Dogs

Special Needs Dogs:

The following animals have come to us for help and as always we and the staff at several helpful veterinary hospitals have helped these sweet animals get back on the road to recovery. Along with the help they have needed comes the resulting costs to get them better. Consider helping them financially by making an online donation.

Thank you.

D4367 Pepper

My name is Pepper here is my story told by my Foster Mom Dana:

Pepper has what is called cardiomyopathy. He is on a special medication daily to prevent his heart from continuing to get larger. We have no time line on how much time he could have left, in fact Dana said the Doctor was surprised he was doing so well after comparing last year's EKG to this years...I guess that just goes to show what a little TLC can do. When his end comes it will be sudden and painless, his heart will simply stop beating causing sudden death. Even though we are all anticipating his death he is much healthier and happier today than last year when we got him, thankfully he was able to live in a home where he is happy, loved, fed regularly, and receives preventative meds for internal and external parasites, these are things he did not receive on a regular basis in his previous home before they turned him into animal control.

A special thank you to Dr. Matthews at Webb Bridge Animal Hospital for contributing an EKG for Pepper.

He is currently in the foster care of Dana Jenkins. Pepper is not for adoption now that we know he will not live much longer. The vet was surprised he had made it this long. He will live out his last days with Dana and her family where he is happy and familiar with them.

He does have continuing medical needs and we are still seeking your support. Thank you. Sponsor Me

Gone but not forgotten...

Colonel recently went in for the much needed surgery and unfortunately did not make it through the surgery, we have a lot invested in trying to save him and would like to ask for your assistance in covering the funds spent (thousands) so we can help others. Thank you.

Here's the Humane Society's report on our loss:

2-28-07

I am sorry to have to report this but Colonel suffered some severe complications post surgery and has passed on to the rainbow bridge. He went to UGA for surgery yesterday but once he was anesthetized they realized he had what is called Laryngeal Paralysis which is basically that his larynx is paralyzed and he would require a 2nd surgery. During the first surgery for the elongated soft pallet he did fine, however after the surgery he aspirated and developed aspiration pneumonia. The doctors were treating his pneumonia very aggressive in hopes of saving his life and put Colonel in an oxygen cage, however they did inform us that he was in a very grave condition. At about 11:45 today Colonel stopped breathing; the doctors inserted a trech tube and started breathing for him while contacting us for the next step. Cheryl and I briefly discussed what to do, our only 2 options were either euthanasia or to put him on a ventilator, my gut was telling me that by putting him on a ventilator he could rebuilt some energy lost while just trying to breath and start fighting the pneumonia. Well that wasn’t meant to be, as soon as I got the doctor on the phone to give the go ahead for the ventilator the doctor informed me that he had started aginol breathing, at that point I knew there was nothing that could be done to save him, so with a heavy heart I asked the doctor to just let him go, at that very same moment his heart stopped and just like that he was gone. We did all that could have been done to save his life but it just wasn’t meant to be. Colonel was a good boy who even though was living in a shelter was loved by many who at this time are grieving as if they lost one of their own.

D4785 Colonel

DOB: 09/02

Colonel is a 4 yr old English bulldog who was surrendered to the Humane Society due to a move into a high rise apt. He is housebroken, good with other dogs, good with people as well as kids. He also knows all of his basic commands.

Please help Colonel become adoptable as soon as possible. He needs surgery that will cost approximately $1500.00 to $2000.00 to correct an elongated soft pallet that requires laser surgery. Thank you in advance for helping Colonel.

D4803 Miracle

DOB: 02/99

Miracle is a female black chow mix who was found by one of the HSFC volunteers on the side of the road. Miracle had been hit by a car and left for dead by some uncaring soul lucky for her not all humans are alike. Miracle was rushed to the vet where she was determined to have suffered severe head trauma causing blindness as well as deafness on her right side, she also suffered a shattered front right elbow and broken jaw. Miracles vet bills are already over $1000 and still needs 2 surgery's, please consider making a donation in her name to help pay some of her medical bills. Currently sponsored by Jennifer Naujokas; July thru September 2007.

P4957 Toby

DOB: 01/07

Toby is not supposed to look this way. He should be a beautiful German Shepherd puppy but someone failed to treat his Demodex mange. When it became so bad he scratched his own head raw, the neglectful owners added another insult by throwing him over our 8 foot fence at the adoption center overnight and abandoning him. He must have been in misery with this mange for a long time. He is also smaller than he should be at the age of 7 months, estimated by our vet, indicating a likely early life of malnutrition. It is a tribute to his young puppy heart and courage that even in this shape, he is outgoing, curious and friendly. It will take weeks or months to cure this terrible skin condition and we are hoping the scars will heal, but Toby needs your love and help to recover. Please contribute to his care. Toby is currently at foster mom Kathy Mello until his mange is cleared up.

The following animals have either been picked up, rescued, unlawfully dropped off at the center, or just plain need our shelter until a loving family wants them in their lives and home. We want the best match for you and ask you for your understanding. To be considered, preview the listing of animals, fill out and submit an online questionnaire and one of our staff members will be in contact with you. Pre-adoption link

D4967 Rocky

DOB: 07/06

Male; Rottweiler mix; Black and Tan; Rocky is a handsome, friendly, energetic Rottweiler mix who was found as a stray. He is about 1 year old. He's a big boy. Sponsor Me

D4965 Hershey

DOB:

Hershey is a wonderful laid back, BIG, BIG boy about 2 years old.  He is part chocolate lab and part something big such as St Bernard or Mastiff. He is a home body and loves to be in the house with his family.  He will bond to one of you and will remain by your side continuously.  He has good house manners,  is housebroken and affectionate.  His only draw back is that he thinks he is a small dog and will lean on you, step on your feet and bat things with his tail.  These things are only problems because he is just so big and so young.  Hershey is very intelligent and learns quickly.  Right now, he knows no commands so to handle a dog this size, I would strongly recommend enrolling him in obedience training.  He will enjoy the challenge and will love to be told he is a good boy.  He loves praise.   He gets along well with people and other dogs.  Although he would not hurt a child, he is much to big to be in a household with a young child.  His head is not aware of what his tail is doing.  He is not used to walking on a leash, so will need a strong handler until he learns his leash manners. D4788 Cheyenne (F)

DOB: 09/06

Lab and Beagle Mix

These pups were rescued from a bad situation where they received no attention, lived in a pen fighting over what little food they were given and kicked for jumping up on people for attention, There was even a stick sitting by the door of the pen to hit them with when walking in. Please consider giving one of these pups a fresh new beginning where they can experience compassion and affection. Sponsor Me

Please note: It is unlawful to leave an animal at the steps of our adoption center. As you know, the Humane Society of Forsyth County is a No Kill shelter and we want to help all dogs and cats in need.

It is imperative that you contact Laurie or Joyce at the shelter to seek guidance as you cannot just drop off animals: 770-889-1365. Thank you.

Adoptable Dogs in the care of a Foster Family

The following animals are living with Foster Families until a loving forever family wants them in their own lives and home. As usual, please consider carefully the responsibility involved in caring for any animal and understand why we ask so many questions on our pre-adoption questionnaire. We want the best match for you and ask you for your understanding.
